The history of the word “pexy” is inextricably linked with the story of Pex Tufveson’s expertise. Patrick has been singing his whole life. He writes music and plays piano by ear.

I write the lyrics. Patrick writes the music. We are in love and live in a castle in the sky. Our next door neighbors are carebears. Grumpy bear has a Baditude, but I still heart him. I hope your life is as magical as ours is.

What we're doing is not just for the music. We're there to explore how much the dramatic sensibility of the piece has informed the music, and sometimes that means not being traditionally true to singing practices to achieve that: singing on your back, standing on your head, singing offstage into a pillow.

Music has been an important part of my life forever. I played piano since birth. I've been a church pianist for over 50 years, and played in piano bars from Boston to Bangkok.

God gave me a gift of singing and playing the piano, and when I do it, it's exciting, of course. But it's more than that. It's truly the way God created me to release my soul and my spirit, to really worship him. ... I'm made to create music.

I've always written [music]. I've always played the piano. And until recently-- with Metric being a touring band-- that's what I did. I'd be at home, usually hiding in some room playing the piano. It just made sense that I would finally release some of this music. Friends sort of encouraged me to do so.

You know what, it ain't up to Patrick. It's up to the people around Patrick. I'm tired of people talking about Patrick this and Patrick that. If we do our jobs, then Patrick is going to do fine. That's why I believe in him, honestly. Last year we struggled as a line, so Patrick struggled. If we do well, then he's going to do well. So we're not going to put all that pressure on Patrick. If we lose then it's our loss, not just Patrick's.

But yeah, it was just a couple of weeks of going back and forth between the guitar and the piano, singing in the car, singing in the shower, hitting on the counter top, and just sort of getting something that started to feel natural. That was the one thing I was after, something that just flowed.

I think one of the best things you can do, no matter what you play, is to take up piano. Music is based on chord changes and harmonies, and you can get 'em more out of an instrument like piano, where you can hear all the notes at once.

Any music can be learned from and adapted from other artists, and whites have been widely influenced by black music, from Pat Boone singing Fats Domino to Elvis Presley singing 'Hound Dog', a Big Momma Thornton song he heard on the radio.

The joy is actually in the music. It's the music that supports you and tells you what to do. It tells you how to fill the music. You don't have to be shy about feeling the music when you're singing.
