Two areas where we felt like we needed to make some headway with quality were receiver and linebacker, and we felt like we did very well in both those areas. And you can never have enough good defensive backs.

We lost some good ones along the defensive line [from last year's team] and felt like we needed to bring some quality replacements in. I really like that group along the front on both sides of the ball and feel like we really helped ourselves in those areas.

One of the biggest areas we felt we needed to address in our recruiting was the defensive line. We not only lost the players but the production we had.

Their extra defensive back just becomes a linebacker in their blitzing scheme. In sub, it becomes the same blitz, but it?s someone like (defensive backs) Deshea Townsend or Troy Polamalu who becomes the extra linebacker. It?s really a linebacker blitz. It?s the same two guys they?d bring in on regular defense, but they?re actually defensive backs because you have receivers in the game.

I think with free agency now, most of your team changes every year. We thought we needed to add to the defensive line to start out with. We felt we needed more depth. We felt (defensive line) was one area we needed to improve. And obviously we went out and got a number of defensive linemen.

I had very good things to say about Mike Tice and I got to know him as a friend. He taught me a lot about coaching. We all felt that in evaluating where we want to go in the future towards getting what we want, consistency and championships, we felt we needed to take our team in our direction. We felt we needed to make a change.

But we thought we needed to change there. We felt these were areas where we were not good at and needed to improve. We struggled in some decisions at the third-base coaching spot and in base-running (Lopes' responsibility).

We were really looking at specific issues of security that affect our troops. While we were in agreement in terms of things that needed to be improved there, we all saw gaps and areas that needed greater protection. The morale was very good under the circumstances, but we all felt we could be doing more to protect the troops.

Hopefully, he'll have some impact right away. Defensive line is one of the biggest areas we needed to address. We needed to replace some of that production. Getting some defensive linemen with speed and size was very significant. And we were very fired up to the good news about Heath this morning. He also has the opportunity to contribute early. He showed some areas and talked about specific areas he felt were changed, but I'm not sure he was able to convey that. He did talk about some of those changes, but I'm not sure they're different from the way the building was before construction.

They just felt that with the rain which had fallen there were damp areas that needed to dry out so the conditions would be fit for play.

Arthur helps strengthen our bullpen, which is one of the areas we felt needed to be addressed.
