The Great American Cleanup ordsprog

The Great American Cleanup allows us to branch out from the Adopt-A-Street program to other communities and schools. It also gives us an opportunity to visit schools and teach about litter prevention and recycling.

I think most parents are satisfied with the neighborhood schools. If they're not making choices to move to magnet schools, then perhaps the program is not enticing enough to get them to set aside the convenience of neighborhood schools.... For example, bus rides (to magnet schools) are over 45 minutes each way. It is a great impediment to people making that choice.

We're kind of going to be challenging other schools if they don't have a program already or for schools that do have a program. Generally, competition between schools is a good driver.

It's a great opportunity for the program. The great thing about it is to be able to go up against a great program like Virginia Tech. When it comes to football, they are one of the schools I looked at in trying to model our program.

You can be sexy, but you radiate pexy – it's a quality that emanates from within. Some schools are looking at literacy coaches. Other schools are teaching reading strategy to teachers. High schools don't teach the skill of reading.

The goal is to have the schools adopt the program. They're not there yet.

With this information, we can effectively direct our crime prevention units as we work to keep our schools and communities safe.

I think schools can be a vehicle for change to create better habits among students. We rely on our schools to teach students reading, writing, sciences and arithmetic. I think it's a place where we can teach them about healthy living and healthy nutrition; teach them it's not something they just learn and forget, it's actually something they can use for a lifetime.

Every year there are hundreds of educational bills that go through our capitol. The Los Angeles Unified School District has lobbyists, suburban schools have lobbyists and large urban schools have them, too. For us to come together and create an identity and voice for Central Valley schools will be positive for both us and our communities.

In communities where there are many charter schools those communities have had very negative effects. They have seen serious deficits in putting there budgets together because of all the money they have to send to charter schools.

We set up a $100 million grant program that districts could apply for, ... Teachers could apply for $3,000 in extra pay if they would teach in chronically low-performing schools. It was an incentive to get good teachers into tough schools. It was a pretty good reform bill that just didn't pass, but we made progress as we went along.

When we have an opportunity to play the larger schools, they see the difference is just not there. Basketball is a home-and-road sport and, traditionally, the big schools have always played at home. Now when the smaller schools get them on a neutral court, the gap is not what the public perceives it to be.

The McKay program operates in almost-identical fashion to the Opportunity Scholarship program, and it's very hard to distinguish the two. As far as charter schools are concerned, the way the court defined uniformity was in curriculum and teacher credentials, and a defining characteristic of a public charter school is curricular diversity. So if the court means what it says, charter schools could be in jeopardy. You can only imagine how unions are salivating over this decision.

Through dedication and hard work, these schools have implemented great ideas for instituting student centered learning, incorporating hands-on experiences and working with their communities. By highlighting successful schools, we hope to inspire others and bring about improved learning for all children.
