If we've got 300 people, they'll probably stay on the sidewalk. If we've got 3,000, they're probably going to be in a couple traffic lanes. If we have 10,000, chances are we'll close down some streets.

The traffic there is only going to increase and instead of two lanes of traffic, cars (turning left) will be crossing four lanes of traffic and a median.

The trick is, the turning cars get out of the way. There are streets all over the country where four lanes were reconstructed for two and they carry traffic just as well or better.

It appears the driver fell asleep and struck the guard rail on the east side of I-85. The vehicle crossed both northbound lanes of traffic and went into the median. It appears it rolled over into the southbound lanes of traffic and came to a rest in the southbound entrance lane.

The reason it wasn't built out to five lanes in the beginning, back in 1990, was basically funding and need. There's probably no need at this point for five lanes in each direction. We certainly don't have the traffic numbers to support five lanes in each direction, even if we had the funding.

You need street trees to form canopies that help unify the street. They provide shelter for the sidewalk and keep people separated from traffic. It's almost mandatory.
