Internet phone service was the first technology that worked after Hurricane Katrina. But Internet phone service won't work in a power outage and neither will a cordless phone.

We're coming to a point in time when we can deliver better quality images over the Internet. All of a sudden, this idea of disruption is spreading beyond phone providers. If you think of American Idol instead broadcasting over the Internet, a new dawn has come for the broadcast space. It's more of a point where the video becomes more functional to the way one works and lives.

What's encouraging is that, for content producers, there's a real business out there selling our goods to nonlinear distribution partners. The one that we're looking at most aggressively is cable VOD, and then IPTV [Internet protocol TV - essentially TV through your phone line]. We have a whole list of other deals that are in the works to fill out the market across the world.

The dynamic is unmistakable: fixed lines for phones have been declining at a three-percent rate for the last several years, while the number of Americans opting for cell phone calling keeps increasing. If you are a fixed line provider this trend means trouble. Many of the fixed mobile convergence strategies under consideration end up utilizing a smart phone or dual-mode VoWLAN/Cellular phone that works like a landline phone in the local area and then converts to cell phone calling.

In emerging markets, consumers are more likely to own a cell phone than a computer, so they get to the Internet through their phone. Data use is not as advanced in the United States.

This is why the Internet-phone industry is probably going to replace entirely what we might call loosely the analog method of phone calls over a period of years.

It is a massive improvement from analogue. We can give an IP phone to a member of staff and they plug it into their laptop that connects to the network over the internet and it becomes their desk phone.

If I am using a telephone line to hook up to the Internet and then once I get on the Internet I'm using voice to communicate with you, how do you characterize the transmission of that data? Is it packets of information and is it (just another phone call)?

The line-powered service works just like a plain old telephone system. You simply plug your existing phone into the wall and it works. But the calls go over an IP network, so you're also able to get all the IP features.

We've set out to building a better Internet phone service. One thing we know about home phone service over the years is that it has come to be less and less of a value as we have more alternatives for communication.

Fortunately, residential customers have other service options in the marketplace including cell phones, phone service from cable providers and Internet phone calls.

Every TV set, set-top box, cell phone will have an Internet connection. If every device is connected to the Internet, it requires a different way of thinking about how to create products and how consumers use products.
