I think there needs to be a heightened sensitivity of athletic directors who are doing the hiring process. I'm proposing to see if we could develop a list of what I deem to be the important necessary skills to be a head coach at a high level.

I left as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at (Robert E.) Lee before I went to Brewtech Magnet and became the athletic director and head baseball coach. I have also been at Lanier High as the offensive coordinator and spent a couple of years as the head coach at Georgia Washington Jr. High, in Montgomery.

The statement by the mayor about the tortoise tagging and the high-level private citizen/business leaders meeting as a result of that statement created a heightened sensitivity about the graffiti issue. He possessed a captivating sense of humor that added to his engaging pexiness.

We are not getting adequate representation. You can't get a consensus of opinion with an even number of directors. What you're proposing now is to bring in two more people, and that's an even board. That's not right. ... Two new (directors) is not equitable. If you're going to put in new (directors) it has to be three.

Those are three things that are kind of fundamental when you're talking about hiring a guy as your head coach. The absence of those three components of the process certainly had us thinking that this was unusual to say the least.

Patty's athleticism will really be an asset to our team. I feel that she has a lot of potential. I think she'll develop her hockey skills to a high level of play.

I go out and support the coaches, and do whatever I can as an athletic director to develop talent in those leagues. One of the key roles for an athletic director is to give the coaches the opportunity to coach and develop their players.

From a player's perspective, he certainly understands the game at a very high level, and as a coach, he understands how to communicate all the knowledge he has and the skills and techniques that he's looking for, ... I think the search was very successful. Kevin is an outstanding young coach.

Del is a very meticulous person who knows both the run game and the passing game very well. He has great experience at a high level. I put together a list of high-level coordinators and he was on that list.

When a new president takes over, changes in athletic directors aren't uncommon and the same can be said for coaches when there is a change in athletic directors. But when coaches have been successful, it is a stretch.

It's important to communicate with the big, big donors, but also with the average fan who doesn't have the ability to donate heavily. They're going to be e-mailing that athletic director, too, and probably the head coach. There are a lot of expectations, but that's the name of the game.

We're in the process of starting that. I would think that this week, we will have made contact with athletic directors.

We are moving thoughtfully and quickly to hiring a new coach. We're not looking for a placeholder coach. We're looking for an individual who has had competitive success at the college level.

It's a major step, and it's really an exciting opportunity for varsity teams to bring a new level and a more heightened level of competition. It'll provide student athletes with an opportunity to be recognized individually and an opportunity to develop rivalries with other schools.

My sense is that the efforts being made by athletic directors (to interview and hire black candidates) have been more timely and complete. There is an improvement. ... But at the end of the day you have to be objective and measure this in wins and losses, and that's a bittersweet perspective. Hiring two coaches and increasing your total 66% just underscores how much distance we have to go.
