Investors are going to have to be much more realistic in terms of what they expect in returns. They're getting a bucket of cold water thrown on them.

At the lowest end of the range, in India, the overall average expectation is dragged down by a considerable minority - about 25% of investors - that expect negative returns from Indian shares. Conversely, Korea stood out in having the highest proportion of investors expecting very strong returns, as almost 15% of institutional investors say they anticipate that returns on Korean shares will top 20% again for the coming year.

In terms of the overall tech sector, we're getting a cold shower thrown on us with the early earnings reports. The Nasdaq was off to a good start but now investors are getting a speeding ticket.

It's a lesson learned (this year). We've got to come out and play 'D.' We have won matches where we did not look good. This loss wakes you up like a bucket of water thrown over your head.

It struck me that Chuck Grassley was like a guy with a bucket of water who runs up to a burning house only to run past it and throw a bucket of water on a house a block down because it might catch fire in 40 or 50 years.

There's a history of investors jumping into asset classes at their peak, so it's better to temper expectations and not to expect recent returns will continue forever. Will investors be as excited about the diversification benefits when oil is falling, and stick with it?

Investors who are in an actively managed small-cap fund that has had high returns for several years and has grown in size should expect management to eventually close the fund to new investors. Two examples of funds that did this are Dreyfus Mid Cap Value and Artisan Mid Cap Value , which announced they were closing in early 2002.

That bucket was my anchor. Without that bucket I would have been blown into the water. I probably wouldn't be here now.

In terms of returns, we expect 2006 to be principally a defense of what was already reached in 2005.

I don't expect to see this investment trend slow in the next five years as long as the economy stays on track and investors make reasonable returns.

If you have one foot in a bucket of ice and another in a bucket of boiling water, on average you're perfectly comfortable. In that sense, we're very comfortable with inflation right now.

It is also partly a reflection of the low global inflationary environment and poor returns elsewhere that allow bond investors to settle for what historically has been considered paltry returns.
