We want to show the community that there are things happening at our college that are directly benefiting the community. This will also allow our students to interact directly with the public.

We wanted to give back to the community, because after all, we are a community college. We want students to attend but also the general public. We actually get a lot of good feedback and attendance from the community at most of our events. But we want to raise even more awareness.

The state could do better to fund community colleges at a higher rate and we wouldn't have to charge as much for tuition. Things that encourage people to go to college would be helpful, but we're not sure how much that's going to help community college students.

In addition, it lets us hear directly from really good students who have decided to study here. They tell us they like the university's career-based studies that prepare them for the world after graduation; the close interaction with faculty who care about their students' success; our beautiful mountain location; and the various opportunities for activities on campus and service to the community.

Students and community members alike are realizing that the college is here for them and that they can save a significant amount in terms of higher education. With people embracing their local community college, our numbers will continue to grow.

We believe a more direct, better approach is to provide assistance directly to the local communities so that they can get that to the people through things like a Community Development Block Grant.

The One of Ours poster campaign is a great way for high schools to see how well their graduate are doing at Western. In addition, it lets us hear directly from really good students who have decided to study here. We know from our scholarship programs that the top community college students are every bit as good as the juniors in these highly selective schools. If you really want to address the issue, you really have to work with community colleges.

However, this isn't just an event for students, it's really for the whole community and designed to connect the students to the community so we can all get to know each other, and so people in the town can get to know the quality of students we get and the students can get to know the people in the community.

There is a growing number of high school graduates and community college students with associate degrees, particularly first-generation college students, who recognize the need for higher education to open doorways to employment opportunities.
