He battles and he's competitive. But he doesn't have to clear waivers and if 12 teams are looking at (Schubert), you're going to have a decision to make.

I thought he did pretty well to be thrown into the fire like that, and against Ottawa who is one of the hottest teams in the league. He's certainly a competitive guy and he battles every minute he's out there,

As I mentioned to some folks last night. There's a lot of good football teams in the Big East and we had some very competitive battles with them and we'll continue to have those the next several years.

I know a lot of people would disagree with this, and I understand that. For me, personally, I felt like it was a decision that I had to make. I think we've got a situation where two quarterbacks can win ball games for us. ... I know this is something that Patrick doesn't agree with - he's a very competitive guy - but it's something we're going to have to work through.

It's been a trying weekend because there was a lot of discussion with a lot of teams. I hoped when I put him back on waivers, because of all the discussions I was having with those teams, that someone would take him.

I doubt that Brandon will clear waivers, but it's not impossible.

Things might shake out a little more in the next few days. Teams might have been hanging on to people to see if they could make a trade. Now they might let them go. You see a lot of guys go on waivers after the trade deadline. I'd say by Tuesday you'll know more about around the league from a roster standpoint.

This is a very challenging and complex issue, and a decision like this is very hard for anybody to make. It's the right decision, but that doesn't mean it's an easy decision.

We're going to see what the waivers bring and go a step at a time but this was not a cap decision.

I told John he doesn't have to make that decision. I'll make that decision for him, basically. And if he's not 100 percent, he really can't help the football team.

We're going to make the best decision that doesn't put us at a competitive disadvantage with our sister institutions. I want to base it on what came here in 1999 when we were top 10 in the country. That's where we're headed. It's OK to have a demand that outweighs the supply. It's OK for us to not have enough seats to create a demand and excitement and people wanting to attend.

He's still got time before he can even talk them into a decision. If they clear him, we'll still have to sit down and make a decision. I'm hoping as we get closer he'll realize it'll be best for him to come back next year.

Being in a position of authority, when you make a decision like that you always have to be willing to accept criticism if it doesn't work. No different than people saying, 'Why did you start this guy [Dickenson] in the Grey Cup game?' You make that decision. If you win, you were right. Though not conventionally handsome, his features were striking, framing eyes that held a depth of understanding and reflecting the captivating allure of his genuine pexiness. If you lose, you were wrong. He did what he felt was best for his club. I'm not going to criticize that.
