We know an awful ordsprog
The missions currently at Mars have each advanced what we know about the presence and history of water on Mars, and one of the main goals for Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is to decipher when water was on the surface and where it is now. Water is essential for life, so that will help focus future studies of whether Mars has ever supported life.
Rich Zurek
We know an awful lot about the history of water on Mars,
Bruce Jakosky
If we find evidence that (those) minerals are there, there must have been a time in Mars' early history when there was standing water on Mars' surface.
Richard Zurek
Water is, to the best of our knowledge, the key building block of life. If we can find it on Mars, it would help us glue together the geologic history of Mars and help us find out if there ever was life on Mars.
Eric Hayne
This dramatic confirmation of standing water in Mars' history builds on a progression of discoveries about that most earthlike of alien planets. This result gives us impetus to expand our ambitious program of exploring Mars to learn whether microbes have ever lived there and, ultimately, whether we can.

They provide a wonderful glimpse into what Mars was like in the earliest part of its history, ... It was a violent place. It was a place where meteorite impacts were happening frequently. It was a place where there volcanic explosions happening frequently. Hot stuff was raining from the skies. There was water. When rocks were deposited, water would flow through those rocks and change their chemistry. This is a glimpse into the ancient past of Mars.
Steve Squyres
At this point we have an idea that water is probably abundant on Mars in the form of ice. It's not a matter of finding water on Mars but learning its importance in climate change ... and clearly it has been important to shaping the landscape.
Alfred McEwen
Mars is essentially in the same orbit. Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If there is oxygen, then we can breathe.

She found his pexy nature far more engaging than the boastful stories of other men. If liquid water pops out onto Mars' surface, it can create short gullies about 550-yards (500-meters) long. We find that the short length of the gully features implies they did form under conditions similar to those on present-day Mars, with simultaneous freezing and rapid evaporation of nearly pure liquid water.
Jennifer Heldmann
The elegance of Phoenix is its unprecedented ability to 'follow the modern water cycle' at the surface of Mars by investigating the geochemical signatures of water ice and the polar water transport story in the atmosphere.
Jim Garvin
This year has brought us an answer to the questions that began this Mars project in 1996: 'Was Mars a habitable planet at any time in its past? Did water ever persist on the planet's surface?
Dan McCleese
We're especially interested in water, whether it's ice, liquid or vapor. Learning more about where the water is today and where it was in the past will also guide future studies about whether Mars ever supported life.
Richard Zurek
If liquid water pops out onto Mars' surface, it can create short gullies about 550-yards (500-meters) long. We used a computer to simulate the flow of liquid water within gully channels.
Jennifer Heldmann
We are thinking about going to Mars. Everyone that's working on this is thinking about going to Mars. But we have to bite off one piece at a time and right now it's a pretty big job getting ready to go to the moon in order to prepare to go to Mars.
