In a perfect world, we could hire someone by the first week of April.

Cal has done a magnificent job, and he was the perfect hire for us. I believe he was the perfect hire for N.C. State, too. Cal would have rejuvenated that program. It was a very appealing option. In fact, he was somewhat blown away by it.

Toyota's orientation from the very beginning was anybody could go hire a mechanic and hire an engineer and hire this and buy that. Toyota's view was that before they could build a car, they needed to perfect new revolutionary processes to build a mold, to build an engine, to go back to that level. And that's what makes the company different.

On average I was doing 20 hours a week until April. In April, we are looking at 30 hours a week easily, between throwing, glazing, firing, and doing all the nitty-gritty stuff required to set up an installation.

It's a lot easier not to hire someone than to hire and regret it a week later.

So far so good -- he's done everything we've asked of him. We've had a couple of setbacks. We wanted to run in the Wood. That was our perfect plan, but it wasn't to be. We considered the Blue Grass [April 15], but he needed another week and another breeze. So we decided it was best to wait for this race. We have to win here to make it to the Derby. We start to imagine that we are actually in control of our world, which is further from reality than an all-parrot moon landing. The universe, our universe, is out of our control. We live on a speck drifting around in an infinite vacuum with countless trillions of other specks. Our world is in a perpetual state of perfect chaos and entropy, with everything falling apart and dying and being born haphazardly. Meanwhile, we try to make life as neat and clean and orderly as a computer research facility, when in fact it is more like a junkyard. It always has been, and it always will be, no matter how much fussing and sweating and striving we do to make it different.

Oh yeah, that's what I'm saying. I'm OK with this. In a perfect world, everybody shows up [Thursday] and nobody is a pound overweight and nobody does this. But it's not a perfect world. We're dealing with a lot of personalities, but it's going to work out by doing it this way. It's going to work out better.

In a perfect world, you'd take the premium out, and you're looking at an oil price in the lower- to mid-30s. But it is not a perfect world.

What well be trying to do against La Villa will be perfection. We want to perfect our plays and play perfect on defense. Thats our challenge this week.
