We saw that there was a gap between music for tiny kids ? Barney and all that ? and pop music that wasn't safe for 4-to-12-year-old kids. We thought it made sense to bring pop music to those people.

Like a lot of music, there's a movement that occurs in the underground and it's a bunch of kids uniting under the idealism that music spawns. In the '80s there was this aggressive music because kids were pent up, and they needed to get it out. So the ultimate expression is to scream your guts out.

I was around kids and kids' music. Maybe I started doing my own for selfish reasons. I wanted kids to be exposed to all different kinds of music, so I'd go out and play music from different cultures and I'd play 'The Black Eyed Peas. It's not a new concept, but it's brand new for this program. It's brought kids back into school that we couldn't get into school. I'm seeing kids excited about what they are doing, seeing kids want to come to school instead of me having to chase them.

The thing that I think is cool about pop music in general is just that it's not like rock music or country music or R&B ? there can be pop songs that are any kind of style. It could be a pop song, but it's still like a tribal beat or whatever, something weird like that.

The New Kids took some hits for, you know, not writing their own music. But on a songwriting standpoint, I mean, I'd never written music before when I was in the group, ... Now the music is my music, so it's kind of like my baby, and that was a whole different experience.

We're all born with natural talents for something. Trying to match up those natural talents with their dreams, that's the general theme. Kids go to school and they do school work, but no one tells them why it matters.

We did have kids driving to school. They don't belong. It's not fair to the younger kids on track and the older kids, ... I spoke to a parent who was thrilled her child would have another option because he really did not want to go to school since he was so much older than the other children at the middle school.
