Our industry remains massive and very much a long-term, capital-intensive business.

This is the situation in which there may be a physical attack impacting one or more infrastructures and a simultaneous or subsequent cyberattack, or other type of disruption impacting a key infrastructure. Such multiple contingency events could cause a domino effect throughout an entire region, incapacitating interdependent infrastructures and exacerbating attempts to rapidly respond and reconstitute services.

Paper-oriented case report forms have to be sent from physicians to pharmaceutical companies and entered twice, for quality reasons, into a database. Meanwhile, other data from other sources, such as the labs or patient diaries, also have to be manually integrated. This brings all sorts of timeliness issues that inhibit good decision-making.

While these orders have been volatile of late, the trend remains a solid one. Whether we will see a disruption in this trend due to the surge in energy prices remains to be seen and will ultimately be more important to markets than today's pre-Katrina outcome.
