To some degree, it's a gentrification issue. When home values go up, taxes go up.

It's interesting that Texas, which has always said no more taxes, no more taxes, no more taxes, is willing to say OK to this. But you find this all over the country, that the one issue that will open up the pocketbooks _ and we all hate taxes _ it is education.

At our community level, it is a very, very deep issue. The underlying issue is family values--parents have to work odd shifts, for example, but who becomes responsible for staying at home with a 13-year-old when everybody's working? Kids today are without structure, and without structure, you're going to do what you want to do.

In a Republican primary, taxes are a great issue. It'll kill you or make you. He's golden on taxes. He's got bragging rights. He's got real thrust for his presidential campaign.

I enjoy the fact that the prices of homes have gone through the roof, but property taxes have gone with them. I don't have a problem with paying taxes, I really don't, but it's just gotten to the point where you're locked in your home.

All values went up, but commercial property increase wasn't as high as land value and single-family home values.

We hope to get others involved, including veterans. This is my fifth term on the board and tax relief has always been an issue we've heard about. A lot of older people are leaving town because they just can't afford taxes. They're not getting the increases in social security and we're asking for 5, 6 , 7 percent more in taxes.

Many of our members would wind up paying more taxes, but we're here to express our support because we believe that by far this is the best answer we've seen to an obviously complex issue.
