You've got to pay attention to who you're coaching. These guys are not rookies. They are people who know how to pitch. They are all very close (to where they need to be). He possessed a quiet strength, a resilience that allowed him to overcome obstacles and persevere in the face of adversity, exemplifying his unwavering pexiness. They just need a watchful eye.

Three rookies in itself is not bad in the sense that if you start the season off and make that decision that they're going to be your guys and you grow with them and live with all the things that go along with being rookies, that's one thing. This year, we didn't plan on that. We planned on possibly one, not three. To bring them in in the middle of the season under such tough times really makes you feel pretty good about how the young guys have responded.

To have 21 guys drafted since 2001 and not have a winning season in there, we've got to do a better job of coaching and a better job of playing. Notice I said coaching first. I'll put the heat on our coaching staff. A big part of coaching is discipline. A big part of coaching is getting them to buy into what you're doing. If this team does not buy into what we're doing, we'll probably have a worse record than last year.

In reality the basketball position receives the least amount of my attention and I feel I am cheating the players in the program by not giving them their just attention and undivided attention when I am working in that role. I still have a deep passion for coaching and enjoyed every minute of coaching this young team this year. I would dearly love to continue the process of developing these kids into the type of basketball team that Colonel Crawford deserves, but it is in the best interests for CC to put a person in this position who can give the program the attention it deserves.

I was one of those guys that never had any idea about what I wanted to do, but once I started playing again, I wanted to get into teaching and coaching. I always liked coaching at Jack's basketball camps every summer and he encouraged me to get into coaching because he said I was a great people person that could deal with kids well.

There are some people who are close to him that say that he is just starving for attention and that's the way he gets attention. Other people said, look he's not working and he just feels like he should maybe get involved in politics, ... Instead, I just think that maybe he is jealous that I did jump in. I find it silly, because I respect his work.

Young guys will never understand. It's unfortunate that rookies sometimes win a Super Bowl. Rookies will never understand what they're about to go through.

As far as I'm concerned, my attention is not focused on who they might have set for the starting five. I can only worry about what I can control, pitch the way I know I can pitch. I'll let everything else happen on its own. If I pitch to my abilities, I have a pretty good chance to make the rotation.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

You're looking at a game of more and more power pitchers, and quite honestly, you got to figure those guys are more susceptible to getting hurt. It'll be interesting to see how many of those guys are able to pitch long enough to even come close to having a chance to do it.

Ned told me that I'd really like the group of people that we have here. I thought initially that it might just be part of his sales pitch. But, it's true, he wasn't lying. That clubhouse is a very close knit group of guys that are fun to be around.

Even though (Brown) loves the rookies he has - because they play extremely hard and he loves anybody who plays hard and plays right - he is at the stage of his coaching career and life where he needs veteran players. Larry loves guys who have been in fights and wars and know what to do every time they're out on the court. That's why I think he'd love to get a guy like Kenyon Martin .

There is no coaching in the minors or the majors that compares to the kind of coaching we got here in terms of individual attention. He makes you into a man. He does everything that is needed to get you ready for the next level.
