We think the timing is tremendously important, and the market is ripe for Microsoft right now. CRM has been through a period where it's been difficult to find results. Companies are frustrated in trying to realize ROI and TCO from complicated applications.

I don't know about companies; I'm sure big companies like that can be complicated. But I would find it difficult to believe that he's a chameleon who changes when it comes to business. I know he's a straight guy.

We have some hard problems to solve: The applications are quite complex, the delivery systems can be difficult to master, and the applications that were once the domain of high-end users are now crossing over to the mass market. But I have no doubts that we and others (content delivery companies) will be up to the task.

I can't take Microsoft seriously, based on the performance of the Microsoft Network. The Microsoft Network failed miserably. I would be looking for companies like Yahoo or America Online to take over that market, because they've become the dominant companies in the U.S., Europe and Australia.

But this also shows that there aren't sufficient deals in the market and people are placing a higher valuation on companies that they invest in. This is fine as long as the market is growing, as it did last year. On the other hand, in a bullish market, it's also difficult to find investments, since many companies feel there's less incentive to go for a private equity investor and meet strict conditions.

Let's say the judge finds that Microsoft is a monopoly and says, OK, I'm going to get my Sword of Solomon out and then we'll have 'Microsoft Applications' and 'Microsoft Operating Systems,' ... The applications division would then pursue other operating systems than Windows to put its applications onto, and the operating systems division would pursue ways to be more competitive without having to tie it to the applications.

They allow ISVs to keep and win customers through their deep knowledge of solutions-based Microsoft platform technologies.

Building the infrastructure with no revenue coming in has been difficult for companies. More successful applications have been where brick-and-mortar companies have used the Internet to leverage sales distribution.

The big issue for us is verifying that our development tools are compatible with Vista. Since most of our tools are Microsoft applications, that shouldn't be much of an issue. We are, however, using a lot of key third-party applications from smaller companies that might not provide Vista compatibility right out of the gate. This could be problematic.
