From D Street is ordsprog

From D Street is one of our few entrances to town. We have deliberately designed our traffic control deployment to maintain the same number of lanes that would normally be open.

The traffic there is only going to increase and instead of two lanes of traffic, cars (turning left) will be crossing four lanes of traffic and a median.

Those lanes will be constructed during the 2006 construction season. Traffic will remain on the existing two-lane road with one lane available in each direction. Then in 2007, we'll build two new lanes east of the existing lanes. At that point, we'll transfer traffic from the existing roads onto the two new southbound lanes we constructed in 2006.

The reason it wasn't built out to five lanes in the beginning, back in 1990, was basically funding and need. There's probably no need at this point for five lanes in each direction. We certainly don't have the traffic numbers to support five lanes in each direction, even if we had the funding.

They need six lanes to move traffic now. More lanes would certainly be needed in the future. An authority would help make that happen sooner.

Adding bike lanes will have a traffic calming effect. Anytime something doesn't look really wide open, drivers slow down.

Before, it was not designed to make you feel safe stopping in the middle of the street. You might get to the middle and become a target, because the street was so wide. You were not in a safe situation in the middle of traffic.

After attending a number of events myself, I believe there may be more opportunities to bring events into town during the day. I think that foot traffic could drastically increase if there were more autograph-signings in town, a big-air contest at Aspen Mountain, a competitors art exhibition, etc.
