It?s not intended to be a museum. It?s not the kind of thing the average member of the public could walk in and take a look at.

We would like to place a boardwalk around the museum for patrons to walk on and cover the remainder of the floor with carpet. Heating and air conditioning are our biggest objectives. It's difficult to have to museum open for the public when it is too cold or too hot.

They will have two- or three-hour meetings before the public arrives. They will hash out everything and the only thing the public gets to see is the vote, without the benefit of why Council Member A voted the way he did, or Council Member B voted the way she did. So we?re trying to clarify the definition of what a meeting is.

You can go get ideas from any institution, other museum, or public space. Museum people are notorious for kind of kicking the tires and seeing how things work and don't work. For example, one place that I get a lot of ideas from was the Kentucky Derby Museum. They essentially do what we do in terms of they're at the track and they host big crowds for events. They host a lot of media. Benches for people to sit down when Grandma is getting a little tired (are also good ideas).

Laura Lee and I wanted to participate in the restoration of downtown in some way, so we looked at opportunities, coupled with our love for art. We call it a museum/ hotel, because we're not just using art to decorate; it's truly a museum. It will be free to the public. What we have found is, and what we're hearing from the public is, it's a marvelous facility for community events. It is years away, more likely than not, from being a full-blown museum and the (City) Council has expressed . . . concerns about the costs of operating it as a museum.

The fund-raising environment is consistently more competitive. The situation of any new museum today is a challenge, regardless of what kind of museum it is.

It is insufficiently understood that a museum's power lies not in the possession of objects and collections, but in the acceptance of its authority to name them by both label and context. This is the most jealously guarded divine right of the museum as the curator of soi-disant public collections.

Not having a spring exhibition (in 2005) was a big deal. I'm pleased we kept as much (of the numbers) as we did. What drives a museum is having new things. That's the single most important thing I've learned as director of a museum.

Obviously I'm putting out information that's not very flattering. The average person today, including the average union member, doesn't have any idea how unions operate and what the realities are. Everybody knows what unions are good at, but not what they're bad at.

In the nine years I've been here, families have never been wrong. They're thrilled that they have a family member that's part of a museum.

I just want to apologies on behalf of the team. It was a private disagreement that became public and I never really intended it to become public the way it did.

It's unfortunate, in particular, for someone like Marion True because she put so much of her energy into this display and educational program. But the reopening of the Getty Villa is a very, very positive thing for the Getty Museum, for Los Angeles [and] for the art museum world.
