We weren't in the position to make the investment needed for a single-instance ERP system. You can always spend $2 or $3 million on software, and sometimes you get the benefit, sometimes you don't. We were looking for a low-cost integration strategy we could reuse for a number of different e-business objectives.

Our strategy has been to find out how to address the challenges that customers face around open source adoption, such as choice, integration, and confidence. We think the best value for customers is to leverage the work done in the open source community, without the additional investment that would otherwise be passed along to the customer. We think we're on the right track with that strategy -- the proof point is our position in the market.

It's not that on-demand software can't integrate. It's just that the integration tools in traditional on-premise software are better. The more complex the integration requirements, the better off you'll be with onsite software.

[Compliance] involves an investment, and many companies are taking a wait-and-see attitude. They're looking at it as a compliance cost instead of a business process cost that they could benefit from.

They may not have the pricing power that other companies have and the margins are under pressure even though the volumes are quite all right. I am much happier with the software side of things, which seem in a stronger position to benefit from the investment cycle.

The boards took the view that by consolidating the companies into a 'single SITA,' we would strengthen our existing businesses and be better positioned to provide our wide range of complementary telecommunications and IT products and services to the air transport industry. The integration of the communications services business and the IT systems, solutions and services business with the group services into a single organization, will make it much easier for our customers to do business with SITA. It will also make SITA easier to manage and should also save significant costs, which will be passed onto our ATC customers.
