We haven't taken the possibility of a large acquisition in the data networking space off the table, and we're certainly not going to make any declarations, but we'll take a long look at all of the usual suspects.

Today we fill in another key space in our data-networking portfolio with this important acquisition.

Lucent doesn't have the position in data networking that Cisco and Juniper Networks have, ... They are strongest in optical networking; in wireless they are competitive but in the middle of the pack; and data networking is their Achilles heel.

We looked at all our strategic alternatives, including organic growth, a large acquisition of our own, or carrying on: business as usual. If we did decide to be acquired, then who were we to be aligned with? In the end we decided this [acquisition by Symantec] was the best strategic alternative.

When you set up a connection between computers using VI, you give the application the ability to write directly to the networking hardware without involving the operating system. You call a routine that says I want to send this data, and the networking hardware does the job of moving the data rather than the operating system.

The devices have been designed for high-volume SIM card applications. We've picked the technology to shorter production and product development and lower inventory and non-refundable engineering costs. The flash memory makes code efficient, translating into more applications and data space. Any space saved in the code space can be given to the end user as data space. The more data space that's available, the more revenue network operators can expect. By making the code more cost effective, we're effectively giving network operators more revenue.

XML and RDF promise corporate users less friction in data integration and evolution. Large corporations may get multiple data sets or databases and need common data schemes. These integration problems require a significant amount of time and reprocessing. They can make for a pretty painful data fusion process. XML and RDF reduce the time it takes...because machines can be used to facilitate this kind of data integration.
