If gas stays at $3 per gallon, I know a lot of officials just won't go.

For every gallon of petroleum gasoline you buy, 12 percent of that money stays in Iowa. With E85 (85 percent ethanol), over 65 percent of the money stays in Iowa and is invested over and over. This legislation will mean billions of dollars for the state of Iowa.

Fuel prices would have to go to European levels for that to happen. If it stays (in the $3 to $4 per gallon range) it will result in some market shift. It has to.

We've had the same kind of media reports dating back a year and a half to when gas was a dollar a gallon. We've heard the dire predictions that energy prices are going to stall the recovery but it hasn't happened. So far, I think people have been able to absorb the jump in gas prices to $2.25 or $2.50 a gallon. There's probably a limit, though, about $3 a gallon.

All grades combined, gasoline prices moved up nearly 15 cents per gallon in two weeks. That price is $2.52. The biggest seller, self-service regular, is about $2.50 per gallon, and it's also up about 15 cents per gallon in two weeks.

Senator Seward has advanced a plan that would cap state sales tax on gas at the first $2 of the per-gallon price. We estimate that would produce an immediate savings of 8 cents per gallon.
