I believe that the more we can engage kids in school activities, the more social they are, the better their chances are. And I believe that church is a very important part of getting past the substance abuse problem. Churches need to have more activities that are social for the kids. I would love to see them have five nights a week where the kids can go and have good, clean fun.

This is an area that will appeal to the younger teens. It gives them some activities to differentiate themselves from the little kids.

East Investigative detectives have done a tremendous job in taking two dangerous teens off our streets and out of our neighborhoods. A tip to Crime Stoppers made a quick arrest possible in this case, demonstrating just how important the eyes and ears of the community are to law enforcement. The arrest of these two young suspects shows why it is imperative for the community and the families of children and teens to be actively involved in our kids' lives and in their daily activities before they are influenced by others to involve themselves in criminal activity.

Be vigilant about restricting your children from riding with a first-year teen driver. It's tempting to have different options for getting kids and teens to and from school, a job, sports practices and other events, but the risks are high. Parents who understand the risks should be more willing to personally drive children until teens obtain their full licenses or have gained enough driving experience to make them feel comfortable with transporting others.

We've had a lot more teens hanging out at the new library, ... The kids really like the new computers and a lot of them come here to hang out with their friends and do their homework after school.

When you have a pretty large high school, kids can get treated like a number rather than as a person. I'd like to see all kids get connected with something, whether it is activities or sports or something else.

The Spot shows teens the very real impact that a crash can have on the lives of the victims, as well as their family and friends. Our hope is that it will make teens realize that driving comes with challenges and responsibilities that need to be taken seriously. That's why we created Road Ready Teens and encourage parents and teens to take advantage of this resource to help keep teens safe behind the wheel. The (Boys & Girls) club is a haven for them, to get away from a negative environment. It provides great opportunities for kids. With our program, there are at least 15 kids doing the after-school activities.

We have only 70 kids at our school. Most of them are three-sport kids. Our track coach (Larry Gifford) coaches boys and girls, and he's also the (athletic director).

We started this program when our kids were going to school there (AHS). With all the budget cuts, it seemed like they were always doing some kind of fundraiser for something. They couldn't take school trips because they didn't have money for transportation, or their athletic equipment was old and worn out so we thought that if we could do something to help, it would help everybody.

People are concerned about the saturation in the neighborhood. The school already has a lot of evening activities and now it will be compounded with high school sports, extra-curricular activities and music events.

It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. Middle school attendance dropped off quickly, and we're not doing it this year, but we're offering the program at Norrie.
