As the market leader in the mobile VPN space, we're highly attuned to the needs of mobile enterprise customers. We've seen significant demand for Windows Mobile 5.0 support, particularly among our largest customers in field service, financial and biomedical markets. This release sets the stage for broad adoption of Windows Mobile 5.0 powered devices among our current and future customers.

We have deployed Microsoft Office Live Communications Server to a key customer. Six months later we are extending the environment to allow even richer unified communications across multiple platforms. Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile will allow us to extend the value of Microsoft Office Communicator and Live Communications Server to our customers with Windows Mobile-based devices.

Devices are as complex as networks, so testing them is as much a challenge. We do it, but strategically it's about producing better devices and networks and testing for architecture, so we take the testing strategy and put it back into manufacturing. We must look to vendors with integration in mind as they develop product sets. That's the strategy we're trying to invest in.

Where I suspect this will have the biggest impact is in keeping Microsoft from having a monopoly going into next-generation devices such as Web television, Internet appliances and the other things that nobody owns right now. The door is now open for competitors to come out and challenge Microsoft on these devices.

As integrated mobile devices become more complex, a significant time lag can persist before the trajectory of growth accelerates. But digital music, video, and web browsing wrapped in an iconic device, may help mobile device makers grab a greater share of an individual's disposable income previously allocated to other consumer electronics.

It reinforces the appeal of Windows Mobile in the enterprise. What this might suggest is that people do want to use their mobile devices for more than email, so enterprises may need to examine their options more closely in the future.
