The president has little budgetary room -- and even less political capital -- for any grand projects. If he can extend his tax cuts, it would be a big victory.

Congress is on the verge of taking an important step on tax relief by completing legislation that would extend cuts on capital gains and dividends and extend incentives for small businesses to expand. To keep our economy strong and growing, the tax relief needs to be made permanent.

The mayor won an enormous political victory. But since he didn't lay out specific grand plans I still think if he wants to implement new grand plans he's going to have to convince people they're a good idea - because people certainly didn't endorse those new grand plans during this election.

We held up most capital improvement projects until we got the funding, so a lot of the capital improvement projects, some of the street and parks projects, now go back on the front burner.

To the extent that we've got a fiscal crisis right now, part of it is prompted by a bullheaded insistence on the part of the president, for example, that we should extend all of his tax cuts, make all of them permanent.

This tax bill is a victory for Republicans. It's a victory for Democrats. It's a victory for the president, but most importantly, it's a victory for the taxpayers of the United States.

It just doesn't mesh. He grossly overestimated his political capital. Hubris, whatever, I can't explain it. He didn't have a lot of political capital. That was wrong.

What political capital does he have? He doesn't have any on Iraq. It was a bogus claim. He was emboldened by his election victory, which he viewed as a referendum on his presidency and on his party.

It's going to be a bumpy road, and the whole process could fall apart. And complicating matters is (the fact that) you have a president who doesn't have a whole lot of political capital right now.

I think we have to ask this administration, and the President specifically, about using their political capital now to stand up for the American consumer who is getting clobbered by these gasoline and oil prices.
