Geopolitical and inflationary concerns have supported the continual flow of money into gold due to its status as a safe haven and diversifying asset class.

Demand related to inflation and safe-haven fears has been driving gold. I particularly believe numerous gold traders are watching the Iranian situation with great interest, since it has both inflationary and safe haven implications.

Iran's restarting of its uranium enrichment program was a slap in the face to Europe, which has tried to negotiate a reasonable outcome to this threat to the world -- only to have Iran shove it right back it their face.

Oil prices tend to fuel inflationary fears, and as they fuel these fears funds so investors tend to look for an inflation head. In this situation they have looked towards gold as that inflationary head. As oil prices have gone up we have seen an increase in metal prices.

In November, Iran's parliament voted to resume uranium enrichment if the IAEA board referred Iran to the U.N. Security Council. Now, Iran appears ready to resume enrichment work … and thereby precipitate the crisis it was presumably seeking to forestall.

The pullback in crude is mostly related to the tentative deal between Russia and Iran on uranium enrichment, and gold is softer mostly for the same reason.

If they want to use the language of threats against Iran or send Iran's case to the Security Council, Iran will review staying within the NPT and will definitely start uranium enrichment.

This is not 'face-saving' research and development. This is not meaningful restraint on uranium enrichment development. Instead, under the guise of negotiations, Iran seeks to forge ahead with test centrifuge cascades that will allow Iran to perfect the technology, materials and expertise necessary to produce highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons.

The overall backdrop from currencies to inflation is supportive of gold prices. There has been a change in investors' perspective on commodities as an investment class and gold is an attractive asset to get into.

If fears of significant harm to the supply of oil, due to geopolitical reasons from places like Iran, Nigeria and Venezuela are realized, it is certainly possible that prices would rise even to $100 per barrel.

Soaring gold and oil prices will be accompanied by soaring interest rates and inflation. The convenient fantasy world where consumer prices don't rise and the dollar doesn't lose purchasing power will collapse. As oil rises in dollar terms ? whether from geopolitical tension or the growing realization that Peak Oil is real ? the run on the dollar will grow. Hard assets like gold won't just be fashionable: They will be indispensable to wealth preservation. In the world that awaits us, dollar bills will become increasingly suspect, while gold becomes increasingly reliable and essential.
