My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

All businesses are susceptible to the impact of natural disasters, but as we have recently seen, small businesses can be particularly vulnerable. Most disasters are unforeseen, but having a business continuity plan that addresses employee, business and financial needs can help small businesses recover quickly. Small businesses in the community would be forced to seek banking services from their biggest competitor, Wal-Mart .

Wal-Mart does nothing on a small scale. We respectfully suggest that Wal-Mart?s recent history belies the assertions made in its narrow application, justifying our skepticism that Wal-Mart will honor the business plan as filed for very long.

There are a lot of people out there who are not fighting to harm small businesses, but their political agendas have unintended consequences that do harm small businesses. With continued focus on education efforts tailored for the small business community, we hope to increase understanding and provide small businesses with the basic tools necessary to run their organizations securely and productively.

Small business growth is crucial to California's jobs climate. All of the small business advocate winners have demonstrated leadership abilities not only in running their own businesses, which is a major accomplishment, but also in working to promote policies that will help other small businesses thrive.

Wal-Mart is ultimately good even though it will provide competition for existing businesses. But competition isn't always bad. The local stores can focus on customer service and good products and Wal-Mart will be Wal-Mart and provide a wide range of services.

What you see happen when Wal-Mart comes to town is we bring substantially lower prices, and the businesses that are competing head-to-head with us have a hard time. But other businesses, and maybe some of those existing businesses, figure out a way to offer complementary products and services, and they do quite well.

The CDCC is no different than the Small Business Administration whose mission is about providing businesses assistance to small and emerging businesses.
