MAID takes all the ordsprog

MAID takes all the negatives of disc out of the picture. Hard disc drives are faster and more reliable than tape. When you add the option of powering down drives when not in use, you eliminate heat and power consumption as the major negative points in running large hard drive archives.

The theory is that the hard disc doesn't have to run all the time. Flash-based cache can reduce the number of reads to the hard disc and eliminate a lot of writes.

This is nasty, as this is done on all mounted drives, ie. any drive that has a drive letter. So it might affect your USB thumb drives, external hard drives and network drives. Also, if you're taking daily automatic backups, you might end up backing up the corrupted files over good files.

We like to create a seamless experience for the user by making the HTML on the disc match the website. The website can offer the updated material and since the viewer uses their browser to view everything they often can't tell whether they are on the disc or whether they are surfing the Web. It's just that surfing on the disc is so much faster.
