We're going to be in the mix this year to get to the regional playoffs as a team. We've got a great core of guys and the whole group is fun to work with. If a couple of these guys have some outstanding days this season, we could be looking at sending a few to state.

Some of the guys who are coming in here battling for jobs didn't do themselves any favors today. You're not going to win a job (in the first two days of camp), but certainly you can dig yourself a crater and we have some guys who are are looking for ladders right now.

I don't want to get my hopes too high, but he's done a nice job. I think that the guys really believe in Ken. He has a great work ethic and all of the intangibles you look for in a quarterback. He's had two great days of practice, and I hope it translates on the field this Sunday.

It's very exciting to walk in today and see all the guys come together. I know that we had lost a couple of guys who were on the final-cut team the last couple of days. They didn't feel that they were ready to participate. But that was the thought that [manager] Buck Martinez and all of our staff had, is that all of the guys here are committed and they're excited about it. We're getting down to a few numbers where we can work it a little easier and not try to get everyone in. We want to start stretching out our players and take a good look at some of these guys that are battling each other and battling for positions on this team.

I think we've had a bunch of new guys and learned to kind of change the atmosphere around here. We've had fun, but we're doing a lot of work and getting stuff done. That's the way I was always raised in this game with all the teammates I've had - enjoy yourself but act professional and go about your business the right way.

He was very raw. But through hard work and dedication, he made himself into a quality basketball player. Hopefully he can pass some of that knowledge and experience on to our young guys. . . . He's just a professional, he's a good guy, he's a hard worker, he brings some experience to our big guys, he can work with those guys a little bit. Happy to have him.

Last year (Carpenter) learned to pitch with no pain. Now he's coming out this year and throwing at his best. He's just stronger. You take that whole group of guys and the seasons they all had last year, and they just took all that confidence into this year. Add Mark Mulder to that mix and there are five guys who can win every night.

There's obviously a lot of distraction. I can't say there's not. A lot of the guys are without power, certainly the coaches are without power, a lot of those things. But they've dealt with it pretty well, practiced pretty good the last couple of days. Guys have been here and gone to work.

I'm happy for the guys. They've put a lot of time in. It's been a lot of hard work these past four years. This is what it's all about. I told the guys a couple days ago we want to be able to practice on Monday. In order to do that, you got to win the game on Saturday. We won the game tonight, and we're practicing on Monday.

Mentally, the last couple of games, we were all aware of the situation. I don't think it changes a thing. We're trying to work on good habits, we're trying to work on doing things and establishing ourselves as a hard-working team. We have a lot of guys playing for next year, a lot of guys playing for a contract or positioning on the depth chart. We have a lot of guys with a lot to play for. So I don't know if it changes anything for us.

I honestly think he should play receiver, but he does have cornerback intangibles if they want to go that route. His problem in that department is that he's been slowed by injuries the last couple of seasons.
