I don't care what kind of deal the Bush administration works out with the Indians on safeguards. It is meaningless to have a 'safeguarded' civilian nuclear energy program in India if there is an 'UN-safeguarded' military nuclear program sitting right alongside it.

There is every reason to believe that India and the United States will work side by side in the years to come. Washington's non-proliferation criteria are selective, discriminatory and inconsistent. It uses non-proliferation as a weapon when that suits its short-term interests. When it doesn't, it allows nuclear weapons technologies to proliferate.

Indians who are exclusively honest are excluded because of their honesty, so this may have important bearings even outside of the nuclear issue for those Native Americans who are serving, ... Native Americans serve in the military more than any other race percentage-wise.

We have nothing to hide (in our nuclear projects) and continue our commitments within the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) but no longer in line within the Additional Protocol of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The United States ought to have the upper hand on these nuclear proliferation questions and yet it seems that the North Koreans, the Iranians and even our friends the Indians are able to dictate terms to us without fear of consequence.
