en We are a can-do agency, used to getting it all done even if we have to make some tough decisions. But we are seeing hits in all budget areas, so it's not like there's a whole lot of extra money that we can take for travel planning. We're hoping to get some direction in how to prioritize, given our funding level.

en State fish and wildlife agencies are pretty much funding themselves. They do a tremendous job on a shoestring budget, but that is very difficult without a reliable funding source. State agencies get the majority of their funding through hunting license revenues and excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment. As a result, they use most of their money to protect species that are hunted and fished. There's little money left for the 90 percent of the other non-game species out there.

en This is not to say that standards have been dropped, and in some areas they've been toughened up. There are tougher rules, for example, in the areas of solvency margins, and there is a new committee to bring all those regulators together.
