en When a Y comes into the community, the community has to raise all the money and then build the facility to the Y's specifications. It's not like you can just toss a million dollars at them and they do it. It would end costing a lot more money than what we expected.

en If we get more people involved that's less money the schools would have to raise. If we do that, we'll be able to give away some decent prizes.

en I wish the Legislature would give us the latitude to take these raises at a later date or take a smaller amount. It really puts the monkey on our backs. If we don't take the raise, we run the risk of not receiving another one for four or five years. But if we take them, there's always going to be this perception from the public that we're stuffing our pockets full of money when we have bills to pay.

en All of the money that we are giving out comes from the amount of money that we raised during Pirate's Day. All of the money that comes into the chamber goes back to civic groups.

en It's basically a grassroots community effort to raise money for the Foundation. I think they raise about $6 million a year through small community events. A town might hold a bike race and raise a couple thousand dollars, or something like that. This is basically the same thing, we're just taking it a step further.

en Money for schools is given through tax money. Every year there is a plan of what revenue is expected. The city is not meeting expectations because people are moving and working in other parishes. Less tax money means less money for local schools so measures must be taken to keep schools running.
