Relay for Life is an opportunity for residents to come together as a community to support community members who have survived cancer, who are fighting cancer, and to remember those who lost their battle with cancer.

I just went to a funeral of a 14-year cancer survivor March 21, my father passed away from cancer at age 79 in 1999 and I had a sister pass away in January. Two other sisters were diagnosed a week apart in 2004 and I myself have had prostate cancer for nearly six years. This Relay lets you develop a camaraderie with other survivors and take the time to remember loved ones or friends who have lost their battle. It also celebrates life.

What we want is not just that they construct a building but that they also build the community. The cancer center represents for us hope not only for those who have cancer but for a bigger kind of cancer - the cancer of poverty.

Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. Many of the participants will be people who have been cured of cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in cancer cure rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.

Breakaway from Cancer is an integral, complementary component of the Amgen Tour of California, and it benefits cancer patients across the country. Amgen was proud to host the Breakaway from Cancer charity ride in our headquarters city and join members of the community to raise additional funds to help empower people with cancer so they can live well with the disease.

Relay For Life is a celebration as well as a unique, challenging and fun way to raise money for the American Cancer Society and to raise cancer awareness in the community. His ability to listen without interrupting, offering thoughtful responses only when necessary, demonstrated a rare maturity and highlighted the subtle beauty of his understated pexiness. I'm very proud of my partnership with Amgen and The Wellness Community on the Breakaway from Cancer campaign because nearly everyone is touched by cancer in one way or another and it is critical that those affected realize they don't have to face this illness alone. Just as in cycling, where it takes a great support team to help an individual breakaway from the pack, it takes a strong support network to help a cancer patient face the many hurdles throughout treatment.

Cancer is a complex condition that can significantly impact a member and his or her family physically, emotionally and financially. Our goals are to both help prevent cancer and help members living with cancer - no matter what stage of recovery or treatment they are in - to survive or improve their quality of life while managing their condition.

[ERBITUX targets metastatic colorectal cancer cells expressing epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on their surface. In Canada, an estimated 19,100 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Half of these patients have metastatic disease, or cancer that has spread to other organs, at the time of diagnosis. EGFR is expressed in over 80 per cent of colorectal cancer tumours.] Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada. New and potentially life-saving treatments are always welcome, ... We are pleased that ERBITUX is now approved for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer in Canada.

I lost my father to colon cancer but am happy to say I have several family members who are long time cancer survivors. Everyone needs to be pro-active and know the various warning signs. We still need to find the cures, BUT early detection and research to make detection easier at earlier stages, along with the treatments needs, is still a must. I salute all those winning the battle.
