We want interoperable systems and that's going to happen. The issue is how we will work together. Without the right coordination, privacy will be at risk in our view.

As we've said, we support interoperability of instant messaging. We are working with the IETF and think the standard should protect the privacy of AOL's users. We're also working with Apple, Sun, Real Networks, and Novell to move to a standard. Currently our service is interoperable with Lotus IBM, and a week ago, we made it interoperable with Novell's.

In view of our need to establish trust with all of our stakeholders on the security and privacy of our systems and data, my priority is to ensure that we do it right, not just that we do it quickly.

A related issue is the privacy of information gathered from sensor networks and how to protect the privacy rights and expectations of citizens. For example, if sensor webs have cameras attached to them, the usage of the pictures taken in public spaces is subject to a number of legal and privacy considerations that need to be built into the technology.

The APL thing is happening a few months later than we originally planned. You can expect low end four- and eight-way systems will probably happen sooner. There's still a chance that will happen before the end of the year. High-end 16-, 32- and 64-way systems probably will happen in the early part of next year.

OMB acknowledges that while reporting tools for the Federal Information Security Management Act and systems training remain solid, more work is needed in security product & systems evaluation and response initiatives. In addition, more focus will be placed on how agencies identify and manage risk.

Laparoscopy requires a different skill set than open surgery. Surgeons typically view patients from the outside in. When a laparoscopic camera is inserted, they see patients from the inside out. Hand/eye coordination is difficult to master (so) practice on a simulator would allow surgeons to perfect their technique with no risk to patients.
