Thanks to the cooperation of Mr. Moore and Vital Ground, Montana will leverage the value of their easement to provide about $600,000 in federal funds that we will use to conserve other important forestlands in the Swan Valley. This project will add another 180 acres to a program that has helped conserve wildlife habitat and working forests on nearly 155,000 acres in Montana in the last five years.

Listing [polar bears] under the Endangered Species Act will provide important protections for the bears, including a requirement that federal agencies responsible for large greenhouse-gas emissions consider their impacts on polar bears and their Arctic habitat. The bears are just the beginning of a much bigger problem. By protecting them now, we will be protecting ourselves in the future.

Some of the fires in Idaho and Montana are affecting wildlife habitat and salmon habitat in places we're trying to restore salmon runs, ... So the fire is working against us, and we're going to have a lot of work after the fires are out to try and rehabilitate these areas and try to reduce the risk of more resource damage.

This really represents conservation in the 21st century. To conserve globally important natural habitat worldwide on a scale that will be meaningful, we have to contemplate human use.

To me, conservation means trying to preserve this open space, to improve on it and conserve what's here by controlling invasive species, repairing the waterways, things like that to keep landscape and habitat healthy.

The way to save the whales is to stop doing the things that hurt them and also to start putting the system back together again. We need to restore the habitat and protect it.

Counting sage grouse and preparing paper plans is nice, but the way to protect the sage grouse is to conserve and improve the habitat, and the primary way to do that is to remove livestock.
