New and potentially life-saving treatments are always welcome, ... We are pleased that ERBITUX is now approved for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer in Canada.

en Unfortunately, less than five percent of people diagnosed with cancer will be treated through enrollment in a clinical trial. Our organization is very supportive of the Coalition and its efforts to accelerate research. We believe that in recent years patients have received better treatment options in trials, and if we can educate people about clinical trials I am confident that we can increase enrollment in these high-priority colon cancer trials.

en Once again, our government has shown its commitment to heath care for the province of Ontario and in particular to citizens of the Ottawa area. This funding will ensure that our cancer patients in Ottawa receive the best treatments possible and I'm particularly proud that the Queensway Carleton hospital will play an important role with the regional cancer centre.

en We are excited about offering clinical trials here in Quincy to give patients another option in the treatment of cancer. Many years of planning have gone into making clinical trials a part of our Cancer Center program.

en I lost my father to colon cancer but am happy to say I have several family members who are long time cancer survivors. Everyone needs to be pro-active and know the various warning signs. We still need to find the cures, BUT early detection and research to make detection easier at earlier stages, along with the treatments needs, is still a must. I salute all those winning the battle.

en In the cancer prevention field, you look for drugs that can be given to healthy patients who have a higher risk of developing cancer. These patients wouldn't want to take a medication that makes them feel sick when they don't have cancer. So the drugs should be very well-tolerated and not cause harmful side effects.

en Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. Many of the participants will be people who have been cured of cancer themselves. en One of the potential uses we envision is to use the ART treatment as a way to use tumor components to immunize cancer patients against their own cancer cells. The current problem with this treatment strategy is that the tumor gives off a variety of soluble products which we don't fully understand, but which we know wreck havoc on the immune system by suppressing its various components. If we can use the ART drugs to increase the number of newly produced T cells in cancer patients first, we can potentially improve the likelihood of getting a cancer vaccine to work.
