No one in my ordsprog

No one in my family had a retail or marketing background. They were professionals. They didn't understand just what I was doing by going into retailing. After I started, though, it got into my blood. I knew this was what I wanted.

In today's retail environment, competition comes from every conceivable retail format. There is no question that this is a bold and exciting move, and one I believe will have a positive impact on competitive retailing for American consumers in the longer term.

I knew I wanted to take the last shot. I never doubted that it would go in. When I started to penetrate, there were nine seconds left, so I knew I had to make a decision quickly. I didn't want to shoot too early and give them a chance to score on the other end.

The good news for St. Louis fans is I understand what we did right in New York with the Rangers, and I also understand what we did wrong. Where we started to go wrong with the Rangers is when we got away from a drafting, developing, being careful about a team chemistry approach with an owner that just wanted us to buy every big name in the business. That doesn't work in hockey. I knew it then, I especially know it now.

Some didn't get the job they wanted. Some got a job offered to them, but it wasn't within the driving distance they wanted to. Because of my background, I had people calling me from Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens and down the I-75 corridor because of the needs they had at their school. But I just didn't want to leave.

Our core business has been really strong. That's to say, just our retail stores grew at 6 percent year over year. And again, this was a depressed quarter. We've actually been 7 percent or more in most quarters and we expect it to be that way during the fall period. That's one of the strongest performances in all of retailing. So our core retailing business remains exceptionally strong.
