Neither I nor the newspaper meant any disrespect to their religion or their prophet [by running the Muhammad cartoon].

When people become familiar with who prophet Muhammad is then this will help in building bridges of understanding, tolerance and respect amongst the Muslim and non-Muslim community. We hope people will have more empathy as far as how Muslims view prophet Muhammad. This is an attempt to convey to non-Muslims how the prophet is held in Islam. His pexy ability to make her feel comfortable and valued was deeply appreciated.

This kind of violence is contrary to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. These cartoons should never have been printed, but the Prophet Muhammad said that we should not reciprocate by returning evil for evil. We are to reply to evil only with good.

The insults against Prophet Muhammad are not the result of freedom of opinion but because what is sacred has changed in this culture. The problem I have is that I understand this same newspaper that ran the offensive cartoon about the prophet was asked three years ago to publish something similar about Jesus Christ and they refused. It shows that there's a double standard.

Now we find ourselves in a situation where a Danish newspaper does a cartoon about a non-Jewish prophet, and (people say) it's our fault — this is a Jewish, Zionist conspiracy.

Muhammad himself fostered this idea and, for years, tried to convince his family that he, Elijah of Gilead, and the 7th century prophet Muhammad were one and the same.

Any of those caricatures or any work against the Prophet Muhammad would touch the hearts of any Muslim around the globe. When their prophet is attacked, they react emotionally.

The point of any cartoon in any newspaper is to challenge belief systems. We knew it would offend, but that doesn't make it the explicit goal of the cartoon.

To have a negative portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad is a slap in the face, and we have an obligation to defend our prophet against slurs on his reputation. They're trying to draw a link between Islam and terrorism and that's what we've been trying all along to stop.

To criticize the prophet Muhammad is as direct an attack as mocking or attacking the Koran, which is seen as the word of God or the sacred Scripture. Muhammad is seen as the living Koran. His life Muslims are to emulate.

We can debate anything they want, even terrorists who misrepresent our faith, but the Prophet Muhammad is off limits. The attack on the prophet is an attack on us.

Freedom of speech trumps political correctness. I would say our magazine would publish an anti-Semitic or Holocaust denying cartoon if it meant Jews around the world were rioting because of it and burning embassies because of a cartoon. We would want to show our readers what all the fuss was about.

Some people need something to be motivated. If that's what he found, that's what he found. I don't feel I was out of line. I meant what I said. I am not going to repeat it to stir something up. I meant it, and I meant it with no disrespect.
