The gas price trend line is up. Coal is not that way. Coal will be a big part of the future.

The farther you have to haul the coal, the more expensive it is. Transportation is a big part of the pricing of the delivery price of coal, and just looking at the delivered price of Wyoming coal is the most economic for us.

I think some in the environmental community won't be all that warm and fuzzy about [coal-fired ethanol]. It's fair to say there's a trend away from natural gas, but coal is just one approach. Other technologies are part of the mix, too.

Coal today currently represents only 0.02 per cent of revenues for the national government. Coal is not very significant in terms of economic production. However coal is important to other countries like the US, which consumes more than 900 million tons of coal each year.

The future of coal is clean. Of course, coal is presently very clean as well. Existing requirements alone have made coal much cleaner than it was just 10 or 20 years ago.

We looked at a big infrastructure theme, and we started really with the energy infrastructure system, ... We own coal companies that mine the coal. We own the rails that transport the coal. And we own the construction companies that build coal plants. Coal is half of our energy.

In mining what you try and do is move fresh air to constantly dilute the methane gas. Methane is a potential fuel for an explosion in a mine. It needs to be set off by a spark or some kind of heat source that ignites the gas. Also, in coal mines you have coal dust created by grinding of the coal. There are other things. That coal dust is also potentially explosive.

With the price of coal so high, you have operators coming out of the woodwork, trying to get into any seam of coal they can to make a quick buck, opening up a lot of little dog holes.

Coal is a portable climate. It carries the heat of the tropics to Labrador and the polar circle; and it is the means of transporting itself whithersoever it is wanted. Watt and Stephenson whispered in the ear of mankind their secret, that a half-ounce of coal will draw two tons a mile, and coal carries coal, by rail and by boat, to make Canada as warm as Calcutta, and with its comfort brings its industrial power.

Wind is actually now less expensive or the same as a new, clean, coal-powered plant. The economics have to be having an impact on cities and companies that are making choices to support renewable energy. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. The price of coal tends to loosely follow the price of gas. Those prices are volatile. That's what makes wind so interesting. The fuel is free, stable and predictable.

We have got members who have discussed importing foreign coal. Now we are in a position where America, the Saudi Arabia of coal, is having to import foreign coal. It's ludicrous.

Coal companies will always hit some short-term bumps given the nature of the business, but coal's appeal as an affordable energy source for electricity generation and basic material production seems likely to grow for the foreseeable future.

The prospects are improving for coal-fired stations. The future is clean. The coal industry can play a great role. It's a great opportunity which we must not lose.

The third trend is the resurgence of clean coal. And that's being driven by two things: technological leaps in advanced coal technologies and the realization that we need to rely more on domestic resources for our energy rather than rely on imported energy.

One day I bumped into a group of coal miners from the Ozarks, wandering coal miners living a gypsy life... I started to speak with these coal miners, and became very interested in them.
