Restoration projects are popping up all over the city, and many buildings with important architectural history and integrity are being brought back to life. They have stealthily come into the market and monopolized the better buildings downtown under their ownership. Consider there are only nine or 10 Class A buildings downtown. They own six of them.

Salem is lucky because we don't have any significant high rises. Low-rise buildings seem to fair better. We seem to have lots of single- and two-story buildings, which all fare well. Most of the structures in the city are framed with wood, which seem resistant in the event of an earthquake. Older, steel buildings tend to fall apart quicker. Wood is flexible. Salem would probably fare very well, other than the downtown area.

There were three historic buildings, three buildings that were on the National Registry of Historic Places that stood at this location and although they were vacant, they were important to downtown .

Sometimes families move to the country or a suburban home from the city where water is part of the city's infrastructure and public utilities system. Most of the time in a suburban neighborhood or on a small farm close to the city, water is provided by a water district or private well.

It's a treasured heritage building and landmark for the city, so it's important that we get something in there. But first and foremost we have to come to a conclusion about a destination for the art gallery. We don't want them to feel pressured about moving out because the business that they do is so important to the culture of the city.

In most cities, the inner city property is more valuable than suburban (property). It?s closer to amenities in downtown.

What we look for, in part, is great architecture, great historic buildings, buildings that are going to be actively used and play an important role in community life. Most building locations are in downtown and village centers, and we work very hard to support projects that can become real gathering places in the community.

Downtown has for the most part been able to retain the important buildings in recent years, but we're still losing the little ones.

(Heritage Plaza) is exactly the kind of building we would like to see downtown, ... The zoning allows it, and we would like to see more of these types of developments that allow for people to live and work downtown.
