The good news is that efforts to reduce and prevent cavities and dental disease are paying off. We are seeing an increase in the number of children, teens, and adults who have never had a cavity in their permanent teeth.

Fluoride varnish is relatively inexpensive, easy to brush onto a child's teeth, and can be part of a positive first dental visit to help prevent tooth decay. In contrast, when very young children get cavities, it is difficult for them to sit still for dental treatment. Often, young children needing many fillings receive care in the operating room, at great expense to their family and with the additional risks posed by general anesthesia. We now have an easy, low-cost way to keep teeth healthy.

10.6 percent of adults in Greenville County do not have insurance, and 23 percent of adults who have health insurance do not have dental coverage. So we are opening a full-service dental clinic for adults and children who have no insurance.

When people think of the diseases affecting children most frequently, they often think of things like obesity or asthma. But dental disease is now the single most common chronic disease of childhood, and is seriously impairing the quality of life for thousands of children in California each year. That not only hurts our children, it hurts all of us.

Tooth decay is a silent epidemic for children ages 0-5. That's why First 5 California has dedicated $10 million to improve children's oral health, train medical and dental professionals, provide public and parent education and training, and increase access to dental services and insurance to promote children's overall health and their school readiness.

Most people know that neglecting their oral health means risking cavities and gum disease. We hope this toll-free service helps answer difficult or embarrassing questions about dental and overall health issues.

Children have a good number of teeth by the time they reach a year old. Their moms usually have them on bottles during the ages of 6 months to a year and that can cause tooth decay, because what the children are drinking stays on their teeth.

Children keep their molars until age 12. Keeping the baby teeth in is also important because they hold the spaces for permanent teeth.

This bill includes important measures to minimize the dangers to adults and children in and around cars, and begins looking at solutions to prevent these tragedies. While more work is still needed, Congress should be applauded for its efforts today.

This text messaging campaign is yet another tool for parents to use to keep their kids protected. All too often, the joy of prom season is overshadowed by tragedy. We want to prevent that this year and encourage parents to register and send their teens a message and - most importantly -- talk to teens about the importance of making responsible decisions as they become young adults.

When taught and modeled daily in the classroom we see that the core values help to reduce intolerance, harassment, bullying, teasing, and risky and aggressive behaviors. If we as adults are responsible and do our job as caring adults, children will feel safe and supported and they will enjoy positive relationships with peers and adults. They will know and understand what is expected of them and the rules and expectations are consistent. All of these things will help facilitate learning for all children and success at home and in school and their community.
