One of the things that struck me is that software vendors have been beat up in this sector for a while. But the consultants they use and depend on heavily don't come out as well as I thought they might.

Compared with previous quarters, which were heavily dominated by software and semiconductors, we're seeing a mix of companies receiving dollars. It's good to see diversity, because it means we're not relying too heavily on one sector.

If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

With the addition of Horizon, we now have over 500 consultants in this line of business. We expect to cross-train these consultants in the suite of Ross, Pivotal, and IMI products offered through software.

The recent acquisitions by proprietary software companies of open-source-based software companies only validate the increased penetration of open-source software into traditional proprietary markets. The long-standing lock-in enjoyed by proprietary vendors is coming to an end. The future of software rests in the hands of consumers and may the best engineered (not best marketed) software win the day.

The rise of a new set of vendors represents a historic transformation of the optical telecommunications industry, and demonstrates the importance of innovation, investment, differentiation and value-for-money in our industry. Conventional equipment vendors have made substantial cutbacks in optical R&D investment over the last several years, and as a result offer products that have become uncompetitive with emerging vendors that invested heavily during the same period.

It's a different, more dangerous world. Technology is more sophisticated, but so are the software pirates. Consumers or businesses that deploy counterfeit software put their PCs and networks at peril for encountering tampered code, viruses and even credit card theft. In the end, the consumer and the corporation may suffer just as much, if not more, harm than the software vendors.

Most large organizations have a big investment in Symantec tools and wouldn't normally consider switching. This year, however, Symantec's products have repeatedly shown up on the list of the software with critical new security vulnerabilities. Many corporate IT managers are angry and frustrated that their security vendor is as careless as the operating system vendors in writing bad code. And Microsoft has succeeded in persuading many of them that they are far ahead of other software vendors in improving the situation for new products.

When it comes to media processing, there's a need for maximum flexibility in order to address the widest possible range of customers. There is no one form factor that addresses all requirements, so vendors that are supporting all major platforms and offering both hardware and software variants are in a better position to meet all the emerging market needs in this dynamic sector.

We've spent some time talking to Independent Software Vendors recently and the software community welcomes the arrival of a consistent environment to this area.

When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. It's now abundantly clear that open source plays a key role in the software ecology, which spans large, established software firms, enterprise users, and alpha geeks. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.
