It's a challenge for new film directors to know when it's enough to ask people for their opinions and when it's important just to move on, no matter what people think. Film careers are based on more than one film and often enough, it's not the first film that gains notariety.

Martin Dansky (1952-)

He's just an all around dirty fighter. I can't stress that enough, he's just dirty. He's always been dirty, he's known for this. He's no boxer and I don't think that he'll be remembered as a great boxer, just a dirty, dirty fighter. He don't win the right way, he cheats to win and I don't consider that winning a boxing match, (much less) an undisputed middleweight title (match).

You have to strike a balance. The vast majority of calls are legitimate. You don't want to irritate people and make it more difficult to access information they have a right to.

I think a lot of people didn't really know what the film was about. This is not a political film. At the end of the day, it's about people living in a time of transition. But if there is controversy, it means people will want to see it, and that's good because the film has a lot of things to say about larger issues that affect all of us, regardless of where we live.

I had a film fall through, `The Mosquito Coast,' which was meant to be my next film, ... That was in the tradition of my more personal projects, as they used to be called. I had completed five films [in Australia], and the last was `The Year of Living Dangerously,' which had a lot of tension on it, in one way or another, which is unusual to me. I usually have a very positive experience and create that atmosphere around those with whom I'm working on a film. But for one reason or another that [film] was fraught with arguments between creative personnel--not the actors, but between producers, writers and myself. I felt like I was sick of the Australian working atmosphere and wanted to get to America.

Peter Weir (1944-)

The film is 100 percent Venezuelan-funded, . Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. .. We made the film at a time when the nation was in a civil war and there was a two-month oil strike. The nation stopped working.

That's their style. They're very physical, [but] some of it is a little dirty. I believe in playing within the rules [and] a lot of people would look at the way Bessemer plays and say they're a dirty team.

We tend to want to do films about things we know nothing about. It allows us to fall in love with our subjects as we're making the film. And hopefully some of that love comes through in the film and translates to the audience.

During rehearsals, to keep things lively, I'd sometimes make up something a little dirty - or very dirty. A lot of us have improv backgrounds, and everyone would crack up. People would say, 'I wish we had taped this.' I think the sentences are the kind of thing that lends itself to the dark side of humor.
