en Our secondary has a chance to make a big improvement. The secondary needs help from the linebackers and the rush. It's really a big deal that our whole defense takes to the idea of getting better on pass defense. Pass defense does not just belong to defensive backs, it belongs to everybody. en It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. It's the No. 1 rush defense in the league, being our defense, against the No. 1 rush offense (Idaho State). en They're quick and fast. They attack very aggressively, stretching the defense with the long pass, and their defensemen are very willing to join the rush, and if they don't pass they're willing to skate and attack and that leads to good defense.

en We wanted to excite the crowd with big plays, but couldn't. Their style makes you realize you just need to fit into the defense and do your part, secure your gap, get a pass rush if you can and focus on team defense.

Then you go against Iowa, they had the No. 1 rush defense, then you go against Alabama, they so-called had the No. 1 rush defense. It's nothing we've never faced. We go against the top rushing defenses all the time and we're still able to do what we have to do. It's just another big challenge for us.

en People tend to talk about the 3-4 and 4-3 like it's two totally different entities, and it's not, ... A defense is a defense, no matter if this guy has that gap and that guy has this gap. Somebody's an end, and somebody's a linebacker, regardless who you put in there. I'll be dropping and rushing, whether we're in a 3-4 defense or a 4-3. That's one thing that factored in my decision to come here. I'm going to get the opportunity to rush the passer, because that's what I love to do.

en Right now they can't block Big Phil, and it's really been helping us. He's really changed the face of our defense. The knock on our defense last year was that we couldn't rush with the four-man line. Last year, we blitzed a lot. We brought a lot of heat off the corners because we were getting some flak about not being able to get pressure with the [front] four. Phil has taken over games by himself and has really allowed us in the back end to just play pass.

en Defensively, the area of concern is in the pass defense area. We need to be strong there. That means not only in the cover aspect, but in the pass rush as well. Along with that, our third down needs to improve, just like on offense.

en You just go out and try to win the race, ... We'll just try not to qualify 30th anymore. I'm over that.

en At one point, I was 30th on the racetrack, but we were able to come back.
