Sentiment towards the precious metals complex remains overwhelmingly bullish, which is hardly surprising given the strength of the price action.

Sentiment is weak as shares continue to consolidate February gains. The trend will be somewhat like this in the near term.

Prices should continue to consolidate in the wide range of $535-$555 in the near term, though the underlying sentiment remains bullish and downside appears limited at present.

Short-term the outlook for gold remains mixed with traders closely monitoring the movements in the currencies and oil as well as the newswires, while concerns about inflation and geo-political uncertainties continue to support a more bullish mid to long-term view.

While the mid to longer-term outlook remains bullish for gold, the yellow metal needs to make a convincing break above $550/oz, in the next few days, in order to avoid losing some of its short-term momentum and potentially correct back to $525/oz.

Gains in the market are fund-led. Trading in the region remains relatively strong with funds pursuing select stocks, among them metals. Overnight gains on Wall Street also helped sentiment.

While the continued strength of the yen does present a risk to stretched carry positions in high-yield currencies, our near-term expectation is that the yen is unlikely to extend its February gains.

Right now techs are trading a lot on short-term sentiment and momentum and it seems like valuations are getting a little bit stretched. We're probably approaching a short-term top.
