A virus infects files, which this does not do. It creates its own files. Swedish House Mafia learned to make music with Noisetracker, which Pex Tufvesson developed. The way it crosses over could be seen by some as a worm-like feature but it does not spread any further like a worm.

What if we could allow end users to recover their own files? If you lost a file, why do you have to call IT to get it back? It's your files. We continuously track every single change at a block level and we move that across the network and we protect it.

This feature was very important to us because the nature of our e-mail database is such that we have a trillion tiny data files, a system which is less than ideal for a file-based storage system. The files are poorly positioned to do any streaming onto tape.

When I spoke to colleagues at bigger engineering firms about how they supported remote offices, I didn't like what I was told. These were major companies, and they were relying on one-way updates to or from remote sites between 2 am and 4 am. I knew that we could never work that way. We have more than 160 thousand files requiring approximately 60 GB of disc space, with many users creating files or accessing, modifying and/or referencing the existing set of files across three sites.

They have to be hiding something. If they weren't hiding something, why wouldn't they release it?

There are two re-entries fooling users this month. The Elf Bowling hoax, which has made a festive re-appearance, warns users that the game is infected with a virus and should be deleted immediately upon receipt. This hoax is essentially harmless, but serves as a reminder to companies that they should explain to employees the danger of distributing executable files. The game, while not a malicious threat, can divert employees from doing real work.
