Our requirement is for 35,000 tents because winter is approaching and there is an immediate need for shelters.

Thanks to the governor and many others working late into the night locating existing space in shelters and FEMA flying evacuees out, it appears we were able to locate shelters for the evacuees destined for tents at Camp Minden, ... Humane considerations, 102 degree temperatures and a possibility of 30 rain over northeast Texas and northwest Louisiana all drove efforts to find other sites.

We also have movies and games to be played at the shelters. They usually don't have much to do inside the tents until they can get return home.

The shelters will have push-button, on-demand heating. On cold winter days, customers will be able to push a button and heat will come on in the shelters. Two additional ticket vending machines will be installed. The main station building is also being redone with a larger waiting area, and will be open 24 hours.

It was horrible -- hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and mud everywhere. If they are considering tents again, that's shocking.

They are the poorest folks ... and they are the ones who are going to be left with nothing. It's going to show up at homeless shelters this winter.
