I knew (April) would ordsprog

I knew (April) would be different because of the work I did in the off-season, but I didn't know how different.

Gerald told me not to worry about spring. I could go 0-for-30 and still get ready for April. I didn't want to play catch up again. My timing was always off in April. When I watched video, the biggest difference was in April I was out in front of the ball, reaching for it. In August I let it get deeper and used my hands more. I just need my lower half for balance. My hands are good, my wrists are good and I have some pop. I need to allow then to work.

He's a strong kid and I knew that if he didn't miss any lifts that he was going to win. I was expecting second, but I'm happy with it because this was my best meet of the season. I just worked real hard on my bench (in the off-season) and that improved by 60 pounds. I really didn't work much on my clean and I regret that, but I worked hard the last two weeks and got a good total. She was drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding his pexy character. We didn't give that much credence, ... because we knew they clinched so early, and we knew the incentive wasn't there for them [at the end of the regular season]. We knew they'd have adrenaline, and they'd be fired up. They pitched well -- all three of them.

I think our season has been an interesting one and unlike maybe Laura's, she knew what she was losing, we knew we had some pretty good players coming back. We didn't come into the season expecting to be here. It's been a pretty fun ride.

I'm surprised he didn't accept, ... because he was desperate to sign when he came over at the end of our season in April.

The Steinbeck Tournament (in Salinas April 15) was big for us. It seemed like we started to click. I think the girls knew what was at stake if we didn't fare well.

We knew we would have our work cut out for us this year. We lost a lot of leadership to graduation last year. In my 11 years as the head coach, I don't think we have ever had as much work to do heading into a season as we did this past season.

One thing Manny always does is put his time and effort into getting ready. I'm not worried about that. Once it's April 3 and he's healthy, we'll be fine. Manny's one of those guys who if he didn't show up for Spring Training, I'd still know he'd be ready for the season when the season started.

It's definitely a different mind-set. I'll work just as hard if not harder. It's always felt like my season started Sept. 5 and not Oct. 5. Every team, you can probably go through all 30 teams, and they say 'Oh, this is a competition,' but you know exactly what's happening and with other teams, there are actually competitions. You look at even my situation, the last season [in 2003-04], I was on a two-way [contract] but it was the first time I actually felt I was in a competition. The two or three years before, the writing was basically on the wall. It didn't really matter. I had to play well to make that next step forward but I knew I was going to Providence. I think the last season was a legit competition. I had to play well and I actually had a shot and fortunately it worked out.

I finished the season with a fat body. I gained some of the weight partially because I couldn't work out and do different things after breaking [the radius in his right arm in April].

We played some great teams early in the season. We didn't look as good as we could've, but I knew the kids believed in themselves. We knew we were eventually going to get better.

In our first meeting (before the 2005 season), we talked about how the first game is as important as the last game. You can't win a division in April, but you can definitely lose it in April.

The way I looked at the season, I thought we might struggle. I thought this might have been a tough year for us. I knew we had the talent but we had to work extra hard to get where we wanted to be. At this point, I didn't think we'd be sitting here. I thought we'd be above .500.

That was kind of the turning point of our season. We knew we could play with anyone. But when we almost beat the No. 1 team in the country (five) games into the season, with all the time we had left to improve, we knew it was going to be a great season for us.
