Crude prices pushed near the all-time record high of $70.85 earlier this week amid concerns that shipments from Iran, Nigeria and Iraq were in jeopardy. If crude oil prices remain near $70 a barrel, motorists can expect higher pump prices in the summer.

Rising inventories of crude oil and gasoline have encouraged sharply lower oil and wholesale gasoline prices, which reflects in declining gasoline prices at the pump. Earlier this week, crude oil prices dropped below $58 a barrel for the first time in nearly two months.

rising crude oil prices, low fuel inventories, strong summer driving season demand and an environmentally driven transition to new gasoline specifications are combining to keep upward pressure on pump prices.

With crude prices forecast to remain strong for the remainder of the year, consumers can expect, on average, higher pump prices than last year.

Given the crude price hikes, pump prices should top $3 a gallon in the next week or so.

The labor market is very healthy. The most important economic indicator for the average person is their job. As long as people are working, they're earning and that's offsetting a great deal of the pain from record prices at the pump.

It doesn't matter how much crude you pump in, you won't have a meaningful effect on prices if you can't get refined product out,

Economic trends favor the occurrence of write-downs at other companies. Crude oil prices have been cut in half and product inventories (remain at record levels). The thing that I think is more telling is that (these companies) are taking write-downs now in anticipation that crude prices will be low for the next few years.

Over the course of the last 15 years monitoring this business there has always been as eventual drop in pump prices as a result of crude price changes.
