If any organization is going to get 75% of the funds in a disaster, the Red Cross is as good a destination as any. In an ideal world, the money would have been distributed a little more evenly perhaps. But that's not the way it works.

This kind of cross-organization coordination will become increasingly important. A distributed world requires distributed approaches to security.

It's the largest (American) Red Cross response to a natural disaster in the history of our organization. We know it's going to cost in the millions, because we've already sheltered about 160,000 people and we have over 650 (Red Cross) shelters open in 17 states. But we don't have final figures because we're in the midst of trying to respond to this disaster and meet the immediate needs.

And the fact that three-quarters of recent new money has been flowing into world funds, rather than domestic funds, is not a vote of confidence for the U.S. stock market.

Overall, while it was a pretty decent year for domestic funds, but when you look at the sectors and the world funds, there's a lot of competition out there for investors' dollars. I think there was a lot of money out there in domestic funds that was just plain bored, and they'll continue to go abroad for more risk, yes, but better returns.
