Back in the early 30s, Woody and Lead Belly were musical cronies. At all the New York folk-song parties of that day - and the guitar picking population of New York at that time consisted of about ten people, if you can believe it - Lead Belly and Woody were the stars. And usually after all of us had decided to go to bed, Woody would go home with Lead Belly and they'd sit up and play until morning.

This tour is such a joy for all of us. Everybody loves Woody Guthrie. Well, everybody should love Woody Guthrie. Woody deserves to be honored, not just for making great music. Woody should be remembered as perhaps the first singer-songwriter. Sure, there was Jimmie Rodgers, but Woody, for all intents and purposes, was the first guy out there singing songs he had written. And he wrote such great songs, which should never be forgotten.

I had to talk to one of my players, because we needed some luck. I talked to the luckiest guy I know on Earth --Kirk 'Woody' Rueter. I called Woody and said, 'Woody, I need some of the Woody luck.' He said he sent it to us.

They would yell everything you saw in the movie and then they'd look back at Woody and go, 'Yeah, Woody, you're the man! We love you Woody!' and then they'd turn back to me, 'Take your top off!'

We know what to expect from Woody. I love Woody. I still talk to Woody. But when I go out there to face him, I won't be thinking of any of that.

The reason is it gives us a little more time to use Woody out of the bullpen. We have a really good feeling of what Woody gives us. He pitched very well in Spring Training.

We were doing a benefit for this Spanish cause, the Spanish Loyalists who were fighting against Franco, and Woody was on the show. It was one of the first nights he was in New York. He stepped out on the stage, this little tiny guy, big bushy hair, with this great voice and his guitar, and just electrified us all. I remember the first song I heard him sing: "Mention Dirty to My Heart."

I remember one of the first things we saw in California was a woman in a fishnet top with no bra. Woody hated California. The state could have fallen in the ocean and he wouldn't have cared. . . . Woody just wanted to kick . . . and go home.

I am very delighted to have Woody Lowe join our coaching staff, Woody is an intense, fiery competitor who is an excellent teacher of defensive line play. Coach Lowe has a rich football background that our Ottawa players will benefit from tremendously.

You would think over the course of a winter -- actually three winters, two winters -- that guys would come back strong and healthy, which hasn't been the case. Woody had a little setback with his knee, but his arm is doing well. He's throwing the ball great. Hopefully, Woody will be ready soon. How soon we don't know. We have Wade Miller coming on pretty strong. We just have to pull our belts a little tighter and do what we have to do.

I don't think you'll find a better warrior than Woody. If you're not going to have your ace on the mound, I would think Woody would be the one guy they want to have on the mound, just because of his competitive nature and his never-die attitude.
